Bug Bites and Stings
Some Insect bites can cause very painful reactions, however are very fatal however they can be dangerous due to the possibility of anaphylaxis due to a hypersensitivity. For example, some people are strongly allergic to the venom deposited when stung by a bee. Bites from some types of spiders and scorpions can be more worrisome from your average individual but most bites are harmless and only cause minor irritation.
In general applying an ice pack to the site of the bite can cause relief from pain. Removing and re-applying every 20 minutes to prevent any kind of tissue damage. Taking some acetaminophen or ibuprofen can also help to relieve pain.
Be careful to watch for any of the following signs of an allergic reaction to bug bites:
- itching
- swelling (other than the site of the sting)
- shortness of breath
- heart palpitations
- chest pain
- weakness
- dizziness
- hives or redness
If any of these occur and you are not trained to deal with an allergic reaction call your local health authorities immediately as these symptoms can be life threatening if left unchecked. Any involuntary muscle movements should be reported immediately as this could be due to a toxic venom entering the system.
